The Church of San Ildefonso, universally known in Toledo as the Iglesia de los Jesuitas, is a large Baroque church of the Society of Jesus, dedicated to Saint Ildefonso, the 7th-century bishop who is the city's patron and, by tradition, was born on this site. Begun in 1629 in the Roman Jesuit manner, it was consecrated, still unfinished, in 1718 and completed only in 1765; several architects worked on it over that long span, among them Juan Bautista Monegro and Bartolomé Zumbigo. Barely two years after completion, in 1767, the Jesuits were expelled from Spain. Its luminous white-and-gold interior is laid out as a cross in the manner of the Gesù in Rome. Today visitors climb its twin towers to a rooftop terrace that gives one of the widest panoramas over the old town. It lies within the UNESCO-listed historic city of Toledo.
