About Santa María la Blanca

A Jewish synagogue built like a mosque, a hall of white horseshoe arches, one of Europe's oldest, seized from its congregation around 1405 after the 1391 massacres and renamed for the Virgin.

Santa María la Blanca, in Toledo's old Jewish quarter, was built as the principal synagogue of the city's Jewish community in the late 12th or early 13th century. Its interior is a hall of five naves separated by white horseshoe arches on octagonal pillars, with finely carved plaster capitals, in the Almohad Mudéjar style of contemporary mosques. Following the anti-Jewish violence of 1391, the synagogue was taken from the Jewish community and consecrated as a Christian church around 1405, acquiring its Marian name; the community itself was expelled from Spain in 1492. The building later served other uses and is today owned by the Archdiocese of Toledo and open as a monument. It is one of the oldest surviving synagogue buildings in Europe and one of the clearest expressions of Toledo's layered Christian, Muslim and Jewish history. It lies within the UNESCO-listed historic city of Toledo.
