About Puente de San Martín

A medieval bridge over the Tagus, rebuilt around 1390 by an archbishop with a 40-metre arch among Europe's widest of its age, and now flanked by a zipline over the gorge.

The Puente de San Martín is a medieval bridge over the river Tagus on the western side of Toledo. A crossing existed here by the mid-14th century; after the old bridge was destroyed during the civil war between King Pedro I of Castile and his half-brother Enrique, it was rebuilt around 1390 by Archbishop Pedro Tenorio. Built of granite ashlar, it has five slightly pointed arches on massive piers, its central arch spanning about 40 metres, among the widest bridge arches of medieval Europe. A fortified tower stands at each end; the city-side tower carries a large carved coat of arms flanked by seated kings. Declared a national monument in 1921, it lies within the UNESCO-listed historic city of Toledo. Since 2015 a zipline has run beside the bridge, carrying visitors out over the Tagus gorge.

Did you know? When Archbishop Pedro Tenorio rebuilt the bridge around 1390, its central arch of about 40 metres was one of the widest anyone in Europe had yet thrown across a river.
