About Monasterio de San Juan de los Reyes
The lavish Isabelline monastery Ferdinand and Isabella built as their own tomb, then never used, its walls still hung with the iron chains of Christian captives freed in the conquest of Granada.
The Monasterio de San Juan de los Reyes, at the western edge of Toledo's old town, was founded in 1476 by the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, to commemorate the birth of their heir Prince Juan and their victory at the Battle of Toro. Built by the architect Juan Guas between 1477 and 1504, it is a masterpiece of the ornate late-Gothic Isabelline style, with Mudéjar elements and a celebrated two-storey cloister. The monarchs intended it as their royal mausoleum, but after the conquest of Granada in 1492 they chose to be buried there instead. On the church's outer walls hang the iron chains and shackles of Christian captives freed during the Granada campaign, displayed as a trophy of the war. Damaged during the French occupation in the Peninsular War and later restored, it is still home to Franciscan friars. It lies within the UNESCO-listed historic city of Toledo.
