About Sinagoga del Tránsito
A 14th-century synagogue of Alhambra-fine plasterwork, built by the Jewish treasurer of a Christian king, now the Sephardic Museum, telling the story of Spain's Jews and their 1492 expulsion.
The Sinagoga del Tránsito is a 14th-century synagogue in Toledo's Jewish quarter, built around 1356-1357 under Samuel ha-Levi, treasurer to King Pedro I of Castile. Behind a plain brick exterior, its single tall prayer hall (about 23 metres long) is decorated with elaborate Nasrid-style polychrome stucco and Hebrew inscriptions from the Psalms, beneath a coffered cedar ceiling, in the Mudéjar style. Samuel ha-Levi later fell from favour and died under torture. After the expulsion of Spain's Jews in 1492 the synagogue was given to the Order of Calatrava and became a church; its name comes from an image of the Dormition (Tránsito) of the Virgin. Declared a national monument in 1877, it has since 1964 housed the Museo Sefardí (Sephardic Museum), devoted to the history and culture of the Jews of Spain and the Sephardic diaspora. It lies within the UNESCO-listed historic city of Toledo.
