A tiny thousand-year-old mosque, its exact date written in the brick, 999 or 1000, with nine little ribbed vaults inside, no two alike, a jewel-box echo of the Great Mosque of Córdoba.
The Mezquita del Cristo de la Luz, originally the mosque of Bab al-Mardum, is one of the oldest surviving monuments of Moorish Toledo. A Kufic inscription on its brick façade dates its completion to the year 390 of the Muslim calendar, that is 999 or 1000 CE, naming the patron Ahmad ibn Hadidi. It is a small, almost cubic building about eight metres square, a private neighbourhood oratory whose interior is divided into nine bays, each covered by a differently designed ribbed vault, in miniature imitation of the Great Mosque of Córdoba; its four columns are reused Visigothic-era capitals. After the Christian conquest of Toledo in 1085 the mosque was converted into a church, and a Mudéjar apse was added around 1186. One of the very few standing buildings from Islamic Toledo, it takes its Christian name from a later legend. It lies within the UNESCO-listed historic city of Toledo.
