About St Peter's Abbey
Salzburg's Benedictine abbey, founded around 696, with a Romanesque-turned-Rococo church, a flower-filled arcaded cemetery holding Mozart's sister, and cliff-cut rock chapels popularly, if wrongly, called catacombs.
Saint Peter's Abbey is a Benedictine monastery founded around 696 by Saint Rupert, widely regarded as the oldest monastery in the German-speaking world with a continuous existence to the present; it was raised to an archabbey in 1926. Its church keeps a Romanesque core from the twelfth century beneath a lavish Baroque and Rococo interior added in the eighteenth.
At the foot of the Mönchsberg lies the Petersfriedhof, among Salzburg's oldest Christian burial grounds, known for its wrought-iron grave markers and arcaded vaults; Mozart's sister Nannerl and the composer Michael Haydn are buried here. Chapels and cells cut into the cliff above are popularly called catacombs, but they are early-Christian and medieval rock chapels rather than Roman tombs. Within the abbey walls, the Stiftskulinarium restaurant is first documented in 803, making it one of Europe's oldest, though not the world's oldest continuously operating one.
Did you know? Benedictine monks have occupied Saint Peter's since about 696, when Saint Rupert founded it; with an unbroken existence ever since, it is widely called the oldest monastery in the German-speaking world.
