About Mönchsberg & Museum der Moderne

A marble-clad modern-art museum crowning the cliff above the old town, reached by lift, sharing its plateau with sweeping fortress views and the abseiling rock-cleaners who guard the town.

The Mönchsberg is a long conglomerate ridge running along the western side of Salzburg's old town, named after the monks of St Peter's Abbey at its foot. Its wooded plateau, reached by a lift that climbs about sixty metres up through the cliff, carries walking paths, old bastions such as the Bürgerwehr, and celebrated viewpoints over the cathedral domes, the old town and Hohensalzburg Fortress. For centuries the cliffs have been tended by the 'Bergputzer', rock cleaners who abseil down to clear away loose stone.

Crowning the plateau is the Museum der Moderne Salzburg, a purpose-built gallery of twentieth- and twenty-first-century art opened in 2004, its façade clad in pale Untersberg marble. It is one half of a two-site institution, paired with the older Rupertinum down in the town below. Three exhibition levels and the rooftop restaurant m32 share the summit with a historic nineteenth-century water tower.

Did you know? The Museum der Moderne is really two museums under one name: the marble building opened on the Mönchsberg in 2004, and the older Rupertinum down in the old town, showing modern art since 1983.
