About Getreidegasse
Salzburg's best-known medieval shopping lane, narrow and tall, hung with ornate wrought-iron guild signs and threaded by hidden courtyard passages, and home, at number nine, to Mozart's birthplace.
The Getreidegasse is the best-known shopping lane in Salzburg's Old Town, a narrow medieval street lined with tall, deep burgher houses that once belonged to merchants, judges, minters and city officials. Its most photographed feature is the row of wrought-iron guild signs projecting above the shopfronts, an ornamental tradition that once let a largely illiterate public recognise each trade at a glance. Several of the houses are linked by covered through-passages, the Durchhaeuser, which open onto quiet inner courtyards behind the busy facades. The street forms part of the Historic Centre of Salzburg, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1996.
Despite its name, which translates as Grain Lane, the street was probably not a grain market. The modern name appears only in the 19th century and is widely thought to be a corruption of the older Trabgasse. At number nine stands the Hagenauer Haus, where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in 1756 and where his family lived until 1773.
Did you know? Getreidegasse means 'Grain Lane', yet the name appears only in the 19th century. Most scholars read it as a worn-down form of the medieval Trabgasse, from 'traben', to trot, not evidence of a grain market.
