About Salzburg Cathedral
Salzburg's early-Baroque cathedral, built by Santino Solari in the 1620s, holds the bronze font where the infant Mozart was baptised and a great dome rebuilt after wartime bombing.
Salzburg Cathedral is the early-Baroque heart of the old town, built between 1614 and 1628 to designs by the Italian architect Santino Solari. It replaced a line of churches reaching back to a cathedral consecrated in 774, the last of which was cleared away under Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich. Consecrated in 1628 by Paris Lodron and finished with its twin towers by 1655, it is often counted among the first monumental early-Baroque churches north of the Alps.
Inside stands the Romanesque bronze font, cast in 1321, where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was baptised in 1756; he later served as cathedral organist. The central dome, struck during an air raid on 16 October 1944, collapsed into the crossing and was rebuilt and reconsecrated in 1959. Three mid-century bronze doors represent Faith, Hope and Love, while the marble facade carries the four evangelists and Salzburg's patron saints, Rupert and Virgil.
