About The Residenz (DomQuartier)
A one-ticket museum circuit through the prince-archbishops' Residenz state rooms, picture gallery, cathedral galleries and treasury, reconnected in 2014 after two centuries of the palace and church being separated.
The Alte Residenz was the palace and seat of Salzburg's prince-archbishops, rebuilt in grand Renaissance and early-Baroque form from 1596 under Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau and extended by his successors. Its Prunkräume, or state rooms, run in sequence from Renaissance through Baroque to Classicism, and hosted the court where the young Mozart performed.
Since 17 May 2014 the Residenz has formed the core of the DomQuartier, a single museum circuit that reconnected the palace and cathedral complex after roughly two hundred years apart. Across some fifteen linked areas it takes in the Residenz State Rooms, the Residenzgalerie picture gallery (founded in 1923), the Cathedral Museum, the arches overlooking the cathedral nave, the Long Gallery and Saint Peter's Museum. It should not be confused with the Neue Residenz, the separate building across Residenzplatz.
Did you know? The DomQuartier opened on 17 May 2014 as a single walking circuit, reconnecting the prince-archbishops' palace with the cathedral complex after the two had been kept separate for roughly two hundred years.
