About Hohensalzburg Fortress

A pale medieval stronghold on the Festungsberg, begun in 1077 and never stormed. One of Europe's largest surviving castles, with a starry Golden Hall and sweeping views over Salzburg.

Hohensalzburg Fortress crowns the Festungsberg above Salzburg's old town, a pale-walled stronghold begun in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard during the Investiture Controversy, when Salzburg sided with the Pope against the emperor. Successive prince-archbishops enlarged it, and around 1500 Leonhard von Keutschach transformed it into a princely residence, adding the late-Gothic State Rooms and marking the complex with his turnip emblem.

Measuring roughly 250 metres long, it ranks among the largest fully preserved medieval castles in Europe. Its Golden Hall glitters with a star-spangled blue vault and twisted marble columns, while a majolica tiled stove of about 1501 survives in the adjoining chamber. Never taken by assault, the fortress nonetheless surrendered to French forces in 1800. Today the Festungsbahn funicular, running since 1892, carries visitors up to the ramparts, the Salzburg Bull organ, and museums including the Marionette Museum and the Rainer Regiment collection.

Did you know? Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach signed his building work with a turnip. The vegetable appears carved on walls, gates and vaults throughout the fortress, and legend claims it was meant to keep the prince-archbishop humble.
