About Kapuzinerberg
Salzburg's quiet wooded hill on the far bank, home to free-ranging chamois, a Baroque Capuchin monastery, sweeping fortress views, and the path where the writer Stefan Zweig once walked.
The Kapuzinerberg is a wooded hill rising steeply from the eastern bank of the Salzach, directly opposite the Mönchsberg and the old town. At around 636 metres it is the highest of Salzburg's inner-city hills, though still only a modest Stadtberg above the valley floor. A protected nature area, it shelters free-ranging chamois and introduced alpine ibex, and its lookouts, chief among them the Hettwerbastei, offer sweeping views of the river, the old town and Hohensalzburg Fortress.
Near the summit stands the early-Baroque Capuchin Monastery, built around 1600 after Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich brought the order to Salzburg in 1594, on the site of a former watchtower. The fortified Franziskischlössl, once part of Paris Lodron's seventeenth-century city walls, is now an inn. The writer Stefan Zweig lived on the hill from 1919 to 1934, and a path along the ridge still bears his name.
