About Hellbrunn Palace
An early-Baroque pleasure palace built purely for daytime feasts and practical jokes, where 400-year-old trick fountains still ambush unsuspecting visitors using nothing but spring water and simple gravity.
Hellbrunn is an early-Baroque pleasure palace on the southern edge of Salzburg, built between 1613 and 1619 for Prince-Archbishop Markus Sittikus von Hohenems by Santino Solari, the architect of the city's cathedral. It was conceived as a day palace with no bedrooms, a stage for daytime feasts and elaborate practical jokes. Fed by the clear spring that gives Hellbrunn its name, the celebrated trick fountains still operate on their original hydraulics, powered entirely by natural water pressure rather than pumps.
The grounds hold a water-powered Mechanical Theatre of roughly two hundred moving figures, added in the mid-eighteenth century, along with grottoes, the Prince's Table and its ambush of hidden jets. The former palace deer park is now Salzburg Zoo. Near the palace stands the small glass gazebo of Sound of Music fame, relocated here around 1991 from Schloss Leopoldskron, though the film's dance scenes were staged on a Hollywood soundstage.
Did you know? Hellbrunn was built with no bedrooms at all. As a day palace, it hosted feasting and games only until dusk, after which the archbishop and his guests returned to Salzburg to sleep in the city.
