About Mirabell Palace & Gardens
A love-gift palace turned city hall, fronted by formal Baroque gardens with a Pegasus fountain, marble dwarfs, and the steps where the Sound of Music do-re-mi was filmed.
Mirabell Palace rose in 1606 when Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau built it for Salome Alt, his companion and the mother of his many children; a churchman forbidden to marry, he gave her a palace instead. After his fall the property was renamed Mirabell, meaning wonderfully beautiful. The city fire of 1818 destroyed much of the building, and it was rebuilt in a restrained Neoclassical style, though the Baroque Marble Hall and the cherub-lined Angel Staircase survived. Today the palace serves as Salzburg's city hall.
Reshaped into formal Baroque geometry around 1690, the Mirabell Gardens hold a grand fountain, sculpture groups of the four elements, a rose garden, and a garden of stout marble dwarfs. A bronze Pegasus, cast in 1661, was placed at its fountain in 1913. The gardens are also a genuine Sound of Music location, where the do-re-mi montage was filmed.
Did you know? The garden's bronze Pegasus looks like it has always belonged here, yet it was cast in 1661 and spent over two centuries at a city horse-pond before arriving at this fountain in 1913.
