About Mozart Residence (Tanzmeisterhaus)
The Mozarts' larger home on Makartplatz, where the family moved in 1773; two-thirds destroyed by a 1944 bomb and faithfully rebuilt, it now displays Mozart's own pianoforte and documents.
The Mozart Residence, also known as the Tanzmeisterhaus or Dancing-Master's House, stands at Makartplatz 8 on the right bank of the Salzach. The Mozart family moved here from Getreidegasse in 1773 to a spacious eight-room apartment that included the large Tanzmeistersaal, a hall used for music and social gatherings. Although the house bears Wolfgang's name, he lived here only until leaving for Vienna in 1781; it was chiefly the home of his father Leopold, who died here in 1787.
On 16 October 1944 an Allied bomb destroyed about two-thirds of the building, leaving only the wing that contained the dancing hall. The International Mozarteum Foundation acquired the site in stages and rebuilt it to the original plans, reopening it as a museum in 1996 with major support from a Japanese insurer. Its displays include Mozart's pianoforte, portraits, instruments and original documents.
Did you know? Despite its name, Wolfgang lived here only from 1773 until he left for Vienna in 1781. It was mainly his father Leopold's house; Leopold remained here until his death in 1787.
