The Kollegienkirche, or Collegiate Church, was built between 1694 and 1707 to designs by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, commissioned by Prince-Archbishop Johann Ernst von Thun as the church of Salzburg's Benedictine university. Architectural historians regard it as one of Fischer von Erlach's masterpieces and among the most important Baroque churches in Austria, and it became a model for later Baroque churches across Austria and southern Germany. Its high concave west facade, flanked by two towers, is a signature composition.
The interior is almost entirely white, articulated through sculpture and architecture rather than painting, so that structure and light dominate the space. The four side chapels correspond to the university's four faculties of theology, law, medicine and philosophy. A listed monument within the UNESCO World Heritage Historic Centre of Salzburg, the church today serves as a concert and event venue, including performances during the Salzburg Festival.
