About Mozart's Birthplace
The yellow house at Getreidegasse 9 where Mozart was born in 1756 and lived until seventeen, now a museum holding his childhood violin, letters and family apartment.
Getreidegasse 9, the Hagenauer Haus, is the building where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born on 27 January 1756 and baptised the following day at Salzburg Cathedral. The family rented a third-floor apartment here from 1747 until 1773, so the composer lived in this house from birth until the age of seventeen. Named after the family's landlord and friend Johann Lorenz Hagenauer, the tall yellow house on the Getreidegasse now holds a museum devoted to the composer.
The International Mozarteum Foundation has kept a museum in the building since 1880. Its collection includes Mozart's childhood violin and his concert violin, a clavichord, portraits, letters, documents and early editions of his music, while the historic family apartment occupies the third floor. The operators describe it as among the most visited music museums, a claim reflected in the crowds gathered outside the door.
