About The University
One of the oldest universities in the world, founded in 1218. Its carved Plateresque facade hides a tiny frog visitors hunt for luck, and inside is the lecture hall of the poet Fray Luis de León.
The University of Salamanca, founded in 1218 by King Alfonso IX of León, is one of the oldest universities in the world still in operation, and the soul of the city. Its most famous feature is the Fachada Rica, a west front of around the 1520s carved all over in the delicate Plateresque style, like a stone altarpiece, with a medallion of the Catholic Monarchs at its centre.
Hidden among the carvings sits a tiny frog perched on a skull; finding it, by tradition, brings luck. Inside, cloisters and old classrooms survive, among them the lecture hall of the poet Fray Luis de León, with its rough student benches, and the old library. Here too Unamuno defied a Francoist general in 1936.
