About Convento de las Dueñas

A Dominican nuns' convent hiding one of Spain's most extraordinary cloisters: an irregular Renaissance courtyard whose carved capitals writhe with monsters, demons and fantastic beasts, a stone bestiary of warning.

The Convento de las Dueñas is a Dominican convent, founded in 1419 as a retreat for noblewomen, which hides behind a plain exterior one of the most remarkable cloisters in Spain. Built in 1533 on the site of an older Mudéjar palace, and forced to fit its irregular shape, the two-storey cloister has an odd, almost pentagonal plan quite unlike the usual square.

Its fame lies in the carving. The capitals of the upper gallery, by an unknown sculptor, teem with grotesque and fantastic figures: monsters, demons, sirens, harpies and tormented human faces, often read as a vivid warning against sin. From the cloister rise views of the cathedral towers.
