A tranquil terraced garden on the old city wall behind the cathedrals, with sweeping views over the Tormes. It is named, by romantic tradition, for the doomed lovers of the Spanish classic La Celestina.
The Huerto de Calixto y Melibea is a small, tranquil terraced garden laid out on the slope of the old city wall behind the cathedrals, above the Tormes valley. Created in 1981 on an old orchard plot, with clipped hedges, palms and flower beds among the surviving stretches of medieval wall, it offers lovely views of the cathedral towers and the river below.
It is named, by romantic tradition, for Calisto and Melibea, the doomed young lovers of La Celestina, the great tragicomedy written around 1500 by Fernando de Rojas, who studied law in Salamanca. A sculpture of the old go-between Celestina stands at the entrance.
