About Convento de San Esteban
A grand Dominican monastery whose Plateresque facade is carved like a giant stone altarpiece. Here, by tradition, the friars listened to Columbus and backed his voyage, and the famous School of Salamanca taught.
The Convento de San Esteban is a great Dominican monastery just outside the old core, famous above all for its west facade, a masterpiece of the Plateresque carved like a vast stone altarpiece beneath a triumphal arch, with a relief of the martyrdom of Saint Stephen at its centre. The church, consecrated in 1610, holds a huge gilded Baroque altarpiece by Churriguera, and the monastery keeps a fine cloister and the celebrated cantilevered Soto staircase.
By tradition, Christopher Columbus was welcomed by the Dominicans here, and the prior Diego de Deza became one of his great advocates at court. The convent was a heart of the School of Salamanca, where Francisco de Vitoria helped found international law.
