About The Two Cathedrals

Two great cathedrals in one: a Romanesque Old Cathedral with a scaly 'Rooster Tower' dome, joined to a soaring late-Gothic New Cathedral whose doorway hides a cheeky modern carving of an astronaut.

Salamanca has two cathedrals joined side by side. The Romanesque Old Cathedral, begun in the 12th century, is crowned by the striking Torre del Gallo, a scale-roofed dome topped by a rooster, and holds a great gilded altarpiece of fifty-three panels beneath a Last Judgement fresco. Rather than demolish it, the city built a new one alongside.

The New Cathedral, begun in 1513 and finished in 1733, is one of the last great Gothic cathedrals of Spain, mixing late Gothic, Plateresque and Baroque. Its north doorway, the Puerta de Ramos, famously hides a modern joke: an astronaut and an ice-cream-eating creature, carved during a 1992 restoration, not medieval. The Ieronimus route climbs the towers for rooftop views.
