About Casa de las Conchas

The 'House of Shells', a Gothic mansion of around 1500 whose golden facade is studded with hundreds of carved scallop shells, the badge of the Order of Santiago. Legend says treasure hides beneath one of them.

The Casa de las Conchas, the 'House of Shells', is one of Salamanca's best-loved buildings, an urban palace of around 1500 in late Gothic style with Plateresque and Mudéjar touches. Its golden facade is famously studded with more than three hundred carved scallop shells, laid out in a staggered diamond pattern. The scallop is the badge of the Order of Santiago, to which its builder, a royal councillor, belonged, and the emblem of pilgrims on the Camino.

Above the door are the arms of the Catholic Monarchs. Inside is a graceful two-storey courtyard with the characteristic mixtilinear arches of Salamanca. Now a public library, its courtyard is open to visitors, and an old legend tells that treasure lies hidden beneath one of the shells.
