About Puente Romano
The Roman bridge over the Tormes, its oldest arches nearly two thousand years old, giving the classic view of the golden city. At its end stands a stone bull famous from the novel Lazarillo de Tormes.
The Puente Romano, the Roman Bridge, has carried travellers across the river Tormes into Salamanca for nearly two thousand years. Of its twenty-six arches, the first fifteen are Roman, probably of the 1st century AD, when the bridge carried the great Vía de la Plata; the rest were rebuilt after the arches damaged in the San Policarpo flood of 1626. Pedestrian-only today, it gives the classic postcard view of the golden city and its cathedrals.
At the city end stands an ancient granite bull, a 'verraco' carved by the Iron Age Vettones long before the Romans. It appears in the city's coat of arms and in the opening of the classic Spanish novel Lazarillo de Tormes.
