About Palacio de Monterrey
A celebrated Renaissance palace of the House of Alba, and only one wing of a far grander scheme ever finished. Its airy upper loggia and lacy, pinnacled roofline inspired a whole 19th-century 'Monterrey style'.
The Palacio de Monterrey, begun around 1539 for the Count of Monterrey, is one of the most celebrated Renaissance palaces in Spain, built in the Plateresque style and attributed to the architect Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón. Only the south wing of a far grander four-sided scheme was ever finished.
Its fame rests on the roofline: an airy open loggia of arches runs along the top, crowned by an ornate openwork parapet bristling with pinnacles, slender towers and tall decorated chimneys. So admired was this design that it was copied across the 19th century in a neo-Plateresque 'Monterrey style'. Belonging to the House of Alba, the palace opened to visitors in 2018.
