About Alba de Tormes

A historic town a short drive from Salamanca, where Saint Teresa of Ávila died and lies buried in a Carmelite convent. A keep of the dukes of Alba and old Romanesque churches crown the riverside town.

Alba de Tormes, a historic town about twenty kilometres south-east of Salamanca on the river Tormes, is above all a place of pilgrimage: it was here that the great mystic and reformer Saint Teresa of Ávila died in 1582, and she lies buried in the Carmelite convent she had founded, her tomb set in the church's high altarpiece. The town gave its name to the famous House of Alba.

Looming over the town is the surviving keep of the dukes' castle, the Torre de la Armería, with rare Renaissance battle frescoes inside. Alba also keeps a medieval bridge over the Tormes, old Romanesque-Mudéjar churches and an unfinished neo-Gothic basilica raised in the saint's honour.
