About Cielo de Salamanca

The 'Sky of Salamanca': a glowing late-15th-century fresco of the zodiac and constellations, painted by Fernando Gallego for the old university library and now preserved, a surviving fragment, in a hushed museum vault.

The Cielo de Salamanca, the 'Sky of Salamanca', is a serene late-15th-century fresco of the heavens, painted by the Salamanca master Fernando Gallego with the help of the university's astronomers. It once covered the vaulted ceiling of the old university library, a painted sky of the zodiac, the constellations, the planets, the sun and the moon on a deep blue ground scattered with gold stars.

Only about a third of the original survives. Hidden for centuries behind a false ceiling, it was rediscovered around 1900, detached and transferred to canvas in the 1950s, and is now displayed in a hushed, darkened hall of the university museum in the Escuelas Menores.
