About Plaza Mayor
Salamanca's glorious golden-stone square, often called the finest in Spain: a vast arcaded Baroque plaza of the 1730s-50s, ringed by uniform balconied facades carved with medallions of famous Spaniards.
The Plaza Mayor of Salamanca, often called the most beautiful main square in Spain, is a magnificent Baroque space built between 1729 and 1755. It was begun to a design by Alberto de Churriguera and completed with the city hall by Andrés García de Quiñones. Three storeys of uniform arcaded facades in golden Villamayor stone enclose it, their arches set with carved medallions of kings, conquerors and other famous Spaniards.
An irregular quadrilateral that Unamuno called astonishingly harmonious, it stands on an old market site and once served as a bullring. The city hall, the Ayuntamiento, closes the north side beneath its belfry-gable. By day it is a meeting place of cafes; at sunset and under floodlight the stone glows gold, and the whole city gathers here.
