Setenil de las Bodegas, a short drive north of Ronda, is one of the most extraordinary of Andalusia's famous white towns, the pueblos blancos. Rather than being carved into the rock, its whitewashed houses are built beneath and against huge overhanging ledges of stone along a river gorge, so that whole streets run under a ceiling of natural rock.
The most famous lanes, Cuevas del Sol and Cuevas de la Sombra, are lined with bars and terraces sheltering under the overhangs. Above the town stand a Moorish castle and a Gothic-Mudéjar church. Setenil is a celebrated day trip, roughly fifteen to twenty kilometres from Ronda, best enjoyed over a long lunch beneath the rock.
