About Puerta de Almocábar

The mightiest of Ronda's old Moorish gates, a 13th-century gateway of horseshoe arches between two round towers in the southern walls, whose name recalls the Muslim cemetery that once lay beyond it.

The Puerta de Almocábar is the grandest surviving gate of Ronda's Moorish walls, standing in the southern defences. Dating from the 13th century, it is built as a series of successive gates with horseshoe arches, flanked by two great semicircular towers that housed the guard. Its name comes from the Arabic for 'the cemeteries', after the Muslim burial ground that once lay outside.

In the 16th century, under the emperor Charles V, the gate was given a Renaissance makeover and the imperial arms, and the adjoining Puerta de Carlos V was added. Beyond it opens the Plaza de San Francisco, where Castilian troops mustered during the siege that ended Moorish rule over Ronda in 1485; the nearby church of the Holy Spirit was built to mark the victory.
