About La Ciudad
Ronda's old Moorish quarter across the gorge, a maze of whitewashed lanes that still follows the plan of the medieval medina, packed with palaces, churches, gates and squares and crowned by the old city walls.
La Ciudad is Ronda's historic core, the old Moorish medina on the far side of the gorge, a tangle of narrow whitewashed lanes that still follows the street plan laid down in Muslim times. Here stand the town's great monuments: the church of Santa María la Mayor, the palaces of Mondragón and Salvatierra, the Casa del Rey Moro, the town hall and the main square, the Plaza Duquesa de Parcent.
Muslim Ronda endured from 713 until the Christian conquest of May 1485, and the quarter is still ringed in part by its medieval walls and gates, among them the Puerta de Almocábar. The Iglesia del Espíritu Santo, built just after the conquest, marks where the walls were breached. It is a place made for wandering slowly on foot.
