About Baños Árabes

One of the best-preserved Arab baths in Spain, hidden below the old town by a stream: a vaulted hall of horseshoe arches pierced with star-shaped skylights, with its clever water system of wheel and aqueduct intact.

The Baños Árabes, Ronda's Arab Baths, lie at the foot of the old town beside the Arroyo de las Culebras, where travellers once washed before entering the walled city. Dating from around the 13th to 14th centuries, they are among the best-preserved Moorish baths in Spain. Following the Roman model, they had cold, warm and hot rooms, the floors heated from below by a hypocaust.

The central hall is divided by pairs of brick horseshoe arches carrying barrel vaults pierced with star-shaped skylights that scatter light across the dim interior. Almost the whole water system survives, including the arched aqueduct and the tower that held a water wheel. After the Christian conquest the baths fell out of use and became tanneries.
