About Santa María la Mayor
Ronda's main church, raised on the old main mosque after the conquest, a blend of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque with a Moorish prayer arch still inside and a balcony for watching the square.
The Iglesia de Santa María la Mayor rises over the Plaza Duquesa de Parcent, the main square of the old town, on the site of Ronda's former main mosque. Begun soon after the conquest of 1485 and built over more than two centuries, it blends a Gothic nave, a Mannerist and Renaissance east end and Baroque altarpieces. A surviving Moorish prayer niche, a mihrab arch, can still be seen inside.
Its brick bell tower rises over the base of the old minaret, rebuilt after lightning struck in the 16th century. Along one side runs a handsome two-storey gallery, added in the early 17th century so officials could watch the festivals and bullfights held in the square. Visitors can usually climb to the roof for views over Ronda.
