About Puente Viejo

The graceful single-arched Old Bridge, rebuilt in 1616 high above the gorge, and, in the ravine below it, the little medieval Arab bridge: the older crossings of the Guadalevín that served Ronda before the New Bridge.

The Puente Viejo, the 'Old Bridge', is a graceful single-arched span crossing the gorge about thirty metres above the river, linking the old town with the Mercadillo quarter. The present bridge was built in 1616 after a flood swept away an earlier crossing, as an inscription on its parapet records; before the New Bridge was built, this was actually called the New Bridge itself.

Lower down in the ravine lies a smaller, older crossing, the Puente Árabe, long nicknamed the Roman bridge though its fabric is Moorish, which stands beside the Arab Baths. Nearby, the ornate Arco de Felipe V, dated 1742, carries the royal arms over the climb up into the old town. All are free to cross or admire.
