About Plaza de Toros

One of the oldest and most beautiful bullrings in Spain, a graceful 18th-century arcade of stone, cradle of bullfighting on foot and home of the Romero dynasty, with a fine museum beneath the stands.

Ronda's Plaza de Toros, owned by the noble equestrian order of the Real Maestranza de Caballería de Ronda, is one of the oldest and best-preserved bullrings in Spain, built entirely of stone and finished in 1785. Its elegant ring is ringed by a double tier of arcades on Tuscan columns, and it is often called one of the largest in the world.

Ronda is revered as a cradle of modern bullfighting on foot: Francisco Romero is reputed to have been the first to fight bulls this way around 1726, and his grandson Pedro Romero became its greatest legend, painted by Goya. Each September the ring hosts the costumed Corrida Goyesca, and a museum beneath the stands tells the story of the Maestranza and the bull.
