About Puente Nuevo
The soaring 18th-century stone bridge that is the symbol of Ronda, leaping the sheer El Tajo gorge about a hundred metres above the river, with a chamber in its central arch once used as a prison.
The Puente Nuevo, the 'New Bridge', is the great symbol of Ronda, a towering wall of honey-coloured stone that leaps the El Tajo gorge carved by the Guadalevín river, roughly a hundred metres above the water. The newest and largest of the town's three bridges, it was completed in 1793 after some thirty-four years of work, and is most associated with the architect José Martín de Aldehuela.
An earlier bridge on the site, hastily built, collapsed in 1741 with great loss of life, which led to this far mightier replacement. A chamber above the central arch, reached through a former guardhouse, has served over the years as a prison and even an inn, and now holds a small exhibition on the bridge's history. Crossing on foot is free, and the bridge links the Moorish old town with the newer quarter.
