About The Nobel Peace Center

A museum on Oslo's harbour square, set in an 1872 former railway station, telling the story of the Nobel Peace Prize, its laureates and Alfred Nobel through interactive exhibits.

The Nobel Peace Center (Nobels Fredssenter) is a museum and visitor centre in Oslo that showcases the Nobel Peace Prize, its laureates and Alfred Nobel. It opened in 2005 in the former Oslo West railway station (Vestbanestasjonen), a building from 1872 designed by Georg Andreas Bull, where railway operations had ceased in 1989. The British architect David Adjaye was responsible for the interior creative design and colour schemes, while the American designer David Small developed its high-tech installations.

Standing on City Hall Square (Rådhusplassen) next to Oslo City Hall, it welcomes roughly 250,000 visitors a year and is one of Norway's most-visited museums. It is a visitor centre only: the laureate is chosen by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, and the prize is awarded at Oslo City Hall on 10 December. The center presents each year's laureate and its themes through interactive technology, exhibitions, debates, concerts and guided tours.

Did you know? The center occupies the former Vestbanen railway station, a building from 1872 by Georg Andreas Bull. Trains ran until 1989, and it reopened as the Nobel Peace Center in 2005.
