About Aker Brygge
A former shipyard turned buzzing waterfront promenade, where Oslo comes to eat, stroll, and catch the fjord ferry, with the City Hall gazing back across the harbour.
Aker Brygge is a waterfront district in Oslo's Sentrum borough, set on the Pipervika inlet of the Oslofjord just west of the city centre. The site was once the Akers Mekaniske Verksted, a shipyard and mechanical works established in 1854. Shipbuilding ceased in 1982, and the vacated quays were redeveloped by Aker Eiendom in four phases, the first completed in 1986 to designs by Telje, Torp and Aasen and the last, the Storebrand building, finished in 1998.
Today the district covers roughly 260,000 square metres of shops, offices, apartments, restaurants and a cinema, with a small-boat harbour and a ferry terminal serving Nesodden across the fjord. A public-space upgrade between 2010 and 2014, led by Space Group and Ghilardi + Hellsten, reshaped the promenade. Around 6,000 people work here and some 900 live here, and the neighbouring islet of Tjuvholmen extends the waterfront toward the Astrup Fearnley Museum.
Did you know? The whole waterfront began as the Akers Mekaniske Verksted, a shipyard founded in 1854. Shipbuilding ended here in 1982, and the yard's cranes and slipways became one of Norway's first big post-industrial redevelopments.
