About National Museum of Norway
Norway's grand new art museum at Vestbanen, gathering more than 400,000 works under one roof, including the best-known 1893 painted version of Munch's 'The Scream'.
The National Museum of Norway (Nasjonalmuseet) opened its purpose-built home at Vestbanen in central Oslo in June 2022. Designed by the German firm Kleihues + Schuwerk, whose 'Forum Artis' won the international competition in 2010, it stands on the former West railway station site beside Oslo City Hall and the Aker Brygge waterfront. The institution itself was formed in 2003 by merging the National Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design, the Museum of Architecture and the Museum of Industrial Art.
Its collection totals more than 400,000 works of art, architecture, craft and design, shown in a chronological sweep of galleries. Among them is the 1893 painted version of Edvard Munch's 'The Scream', the best-known version of the motif, displayed in a dedicated Munch room. That painting, once held by the National Gallery, was stolen in February 1994 and recovered undamaged that May. The museum is widely described as the largest art museum in the Nordic countries.
Did you know? The National Museum was created in 2003 by merging five older institutions, including the National Gallery, and its new Vestbanen building finally opened in June 2022 after a competition won in 2010.
