About Vigeland Park
More than 200 sculptures of naked humanity, from cradle to grave, all by one obsessive artist, Gustav Vigeland, crowned by a 14-metre column of intertwined bodies.
Vigeland Park is the sculpture installation at the heart of Frogner Park in Oslo, created in its entirety by the sculptor Gustav Vigeland. He worked on the arrangement from the 1920s until his death in 1943, producing about 212 bronze and granite figures, most of the granite carved from Iddefjord stone. The park is open at all hours and free to enter, and is widely described as the world's largest sculpture park made by a single artist.
The installation is laid out along a central axis. A 100-metre bridge carries 58 sculptures, among them the celebrated 'Angry Boy' (Sinnataggen), and leads to a fountain ringed by 60 bronze reliefs and set in an 1,800-square-metre granite mosaic. At the highest point stands the Monolith, a single block of granite about 14.12 metres tall carved with 121 intertwined human figures. Three stonemasons worked on it for some fourteen years from 1929, and it was first shown to the public around Christmas 1944.
Did you know? Gustav Vigeland created every one of the park's roughly 212 bronze and granite figures himself, working from the 1920s until his death in 1943; admission is free and the gates never close.
