About Fram Museum
The original polar ship Fram, three storeys of dark timber you can climb aboard, anchors a Bygdøy museum tracing Norway's boldest Arctic and Antarctic expeditions and their crews.
The Fram Museum (Frammuseet) on the Bygdøynes point of Oslo's Bygdøy peninsula was inaugurated on 20 May 1936. It is built around the original Fram, the polar exploration ship that visitors can enter and walk through, its interior largely intact. The museum honours Norwegian polar exploration and three explorers in particular: Fridtjof Nansen, Otto Sverdrup and Roald Amundsen. The Fram was designed and built by Colin Archer of Larvik and launched on 26 October 1892, with a wide, shallow hull so that pressing pack ice would push the ship upward rather than crush it.
During Nansen's 1893-1896 expedition the Fram was frozen into the Arctic ice for nearly three years and reached 85°57′N. Sverdrup commanded a second expedition (1898-1902) in the Canadian Arctic, and Amundsen took the ship to Antarctica in 1910-1912, first reaching the South Pole in December 1911. The museum also displays the Gjøa, the first vessel to transit the Northwest Passage, completed in 1906.
Did you know? Colin Archer built the Fram with a rounded, almost keel-less hull barely gripping the water, so that when Arctic pack ice squeezed in, it lifted the ship clear rather than crushing her between the floes.
