About MUNCH

A leaning 13-storey tower in Bjørvika holding more than 26,000 works Edvard Munch left to Oslo, including its own painted and pastel versions of 'The Scream'.

MUNCH, the museum dedicated to Edvard Munch, stands in the Bjørvika district beside the Oslo Opera House. King Harald V opened the new building on 22 October 2021. Designed by the Spanish architect Juan Herreros, whose competition-winning scheme was known as 'Lambda', the tower rises about 60 metres over 13 storeys, its upper section leaning forward like the Greek letter that named it. Construction of the Bjørvika building began in September 2015.

The museum offers more than 26,000 square metres of exhibition space and holds over 26,000 works by Munch, drawn from the artist's bequest to the city of Oslo, one of the world's largest bodies of work by a single artist. Among them are its own versions of 'The Scream', a painted version from 1910 and a pastel from 1893. The collection's earlier home opened at Tøyen in 1963 and closed in 2021 when the Bjørvika building took over.
