About Astrup Fearnley Museet
A private modern-art museum under Renzo Piano's sail-like glass roof at the tip of Tjuvholmen, holding provocative contemporary works from Koons and Hirst to Cindy Sherman.
The Astrup Fearnley Museet is a privately owned museum of modern and contemporary art, opened to the public in 1993. It is funded by philanthropic foundations tied to the Fearnley shipping family, combined in 1995 into the Thomas Fearnley, Heddy and Nils Astrup Foundation. The collection began with a focus on American appropriation artists of the 1980s and has since broadened to international contemporary art from the 1960s onward, with works by Jeff Koons, Cindy Sherman, Matthew Barney and Damien Hirst.
In 2012 the museum moved to Tjuvholmen, at the western tip of the Aker Brygge waterfront. Its new home, designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano, comprises two buildings under a sweeping glass roof and separated by a canal, opening on 29 September 2012 with around 4,200 square metres of space. The museum sits within the Tjuvholmen sculpture park and beach, and concentrates on privately held international art that complements Oslo's public collections.
Did you know? The museum's collection began with American appropriation artists of the 1980s, who recycled advertising and celebrity into gallery art, then widened to include international work reaching back to the 1960s.
