About Akershus Fortress
A medieval castle and fortress that has guarded Oslo's harbour for over seven centuries, never taken by siege, now home to a Renaissance royal residence, the Royal Mausoleum and Norway's Resistance Museum.
Akershus Fortress (Akershus festning) is a medieval castle and fortress on the eastern shore of the Oslofjord, guarding the entrance to Oslo's harbour. It was built from the late 1290s under King Haakon V Magnusson and is first mentioned in written sources in 1300, and it withstood every siege laid against it before the Second World War. After a fire in 1624, King Christian IV had the castle rebuilt as a Renaissance residence.
Akershus Castle contains the Royal Mausoleum, where King Haakon VII, Queen Maud, King Olav V and Crown Princess Märtha are interred. The fortress surrendered to German forces without a fight in 1940 and was used by the occupiers during the war; it was formally handed back to the Norwegian resistance, represented by Terje Rollem, at the liberation on 11 May 1945. The grounds, open to the public daily, house Norway's Resistance Museum (Norges Hjemmefrontmuseum) and the Norwegian Armed Forces Museum.
Did you know? First raised in the late 1290s under King Haakon V, the fortress withstood every siege laid against it. It fell only in 1940, when it surrendered to German forces without a fight.
