About Karl Johans gate

Oslo's main street and ceremonial spine, rising from Central Station to the Royal Palace and lined by the parliament, the cathedral, the National Theatre and the city's grandest cafes.

Karl Johans gate is the main street of Oslo, running from Oslo Central Station in the east up to the Royal Palace at Slottsplassen in the west. It was named in 1852 in honour of the recently deceased King Charles III John, known as Karl Johan, and was assembled from several older streets, with its grand western avenue laid out during the 1840s. The two formerly separate halves were joined into one continuous street after the Storting building was completed in 1866.

Along its length the boulevard passes the parliament, Oslo Cathedral, the National Theatre and the old buildings of the University of Oslo. The eastern end traces back to the original city of Christiania founded by Christian IV, where it was once called Østre gate. Only the central stretches are pedestrianized, and some sections still carry traffic. On 17 May, Norway's Constitution Day, the children's parade fills the street on its way past the Royal Palace.

Did you know? Karl Johans gate was pieced together from several older roads and only became one continuous street in 1866, once the new parliament building at its centre was finally finished and the two halves could be joined.
