About Oslo Cathedral
Oslo's main Lutheran church, built in the 1690s, its sober brick exterior hiding a fully painted ceiling by Hugo Lous Mohr and choir stained glass by Emanuel Vigeland.
Oslo Cathedral (Oslo domkirke) is the main church for the Church of Norway's Diocese of Oslo and the parish church for downtown Oslo. The present building dates from 1694 to 1697, when the foundation stone was laid and the church consecrated, and it was long known as Our Saviour's Church (Vår Frelsers kirke). It replaced earlier churches, including the medieval Hallvard's Cathedral.
The interior is richly decorated: the ceiling was painted by Hugo Lous Mohr over roughly 1936 to 1950, the choir holds stained-glass windows made by Emanuel Vigeland between 1910 and 1916, and the bronze west doors were created by Dagfin Werenskiold in 1938. The current organ was built by Jan Ryde in 1997 for the church's 300th anniversary. The Norwegian royal family and government use the cathedral for public events such as weddings and funerals, and it reopened in 2010 after a major restoration.
Did you know? The present cathedral was built between 1694 and 1697 and was long called Our Saviour's Church; it is the third main church Oslo has raised, after the medieval Hallvard's Cathedral among others.
