About Nationaltheatret (National Theatre)
One of Norway's grandest stages, opened in 1899 between the palace and parliament, with bronze statues of the rival playwrights Henrik Ibsen and Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson standing guard out front.
Nationaltheatret (the National Theatre) is one of Norway's largest and most prominent venues for the performing arts. Designed by the architect Henrik Bull, it opened with its first performance on 1 September 1899, though the company traces its roots to the Christiania Theatre established in 1829. Its three official opening performances featured works by Ludvig Holberg, Henrik Ibsen (An Enemy of the People) and Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson (Sigurd Jorsalfar).
The theatre stands centrally between the Royal Palace and the Parliament, opposite the old buildings of the University of Oslo. Statues of Ibsen and Bjørnson, created by the sculptor Stephan Sinding and unveiled in 1899, flank the main entrance. The Norwegian government began providing financial support to the theatre from 1929, and the building is today a protected cultural heritage site, still one of the country's leading houses for drama.
Did you know? The theatre opened in 1899 by staging three of its national giants in turn: Ludvig Holberg, then Henrik Ibsen's An Enemy of the People, then Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson's Sigurd Jorsalfar, one after another.
