About The Storting (Parliament)

The seat of Norway's parliament, a yellow-brick building of 1866 with a bowed central chamber and two stone lions keeping watch over Eidsvolls plass, the open square out front.

The Storting Building (Stortingsbygningen) is the seat of the Storting, the Parliament of Norway. It was designed by the Swedish architect Emil Victor Langlet and opened on 5 March 1866, after construction that began in 1860. Built of yellow brick with details and a basement of light grey granite, it has an eclectic design drawing on French and Italian influences, and a distinctive semicircular section at the front that houses the plenary chamber.

Two lion sculptures, designed by Christopher Borch, have guarded the entrance on Løvebakken (Lion Hill) since 1865. The building stands at Karl Johans gate 22 in central Oslo, facing the public square Eidsvolls plass, and today the Storting seats 169 elected representatives. Its completion also reshaped the street outside, as the two halves of Karl Johans gate were joined into one continuous avenue once the parliament was finished.

Did you know? A well-worn Oslo story claims the two stone lions guarding the parliament were carved by a prisoner in exchange for a lighter sentence; it is fondly retold, though not firmly documented as fact.
