About Norsk Folkemuseum
A whole country of relocated timber buildings, more than 150 of them, gathered on Bygdøy around a medieval stave church, in one of the world's first open-air museums.
The Norsk Folkemuseum (Norwegian Museum of Cultural History) on Oslo's Bygdøy peninsula was founded in 1894 by the librarian and historian Hans Aall. It is a large open-air museum of more than 150 buildings relocated from towns and rural districts across Norway, alongside indoor collections representing every social group and region. It incorporates King Oscar II's Collection at Bygdøy, opened in 1881 and often described as one of the world's first open-air museums, a title also claimed for Sweden's Skansen.
Its centrepiece is the Gol Stave Church, whose timber dates to the late twelfth century, roughly 1157-1216. The church originally stood in Gol, in Hallingdal; when a new parish church replaced it around 1880, its materials were saved, and King Oscar II financed its move to Bygdøy, where it was dismantled in 1884 and re-erected in 1885 as a heavily restored reconstruction. The grounds also include five medieval buildings, an 1865 Oslo tenement, and significant Sami collections transferred in 1951.
Did you know? The museum grew out of King Oscar II's open-air collection at Bygdøy, opened in 1881 and often called one of the world's first, though Sweden's Skansen is more usually given that title internationally.
